Ulster Club Football Final: Lacey has no fears Kilcoo have shown hand after Scotstown demolition

Kilkull head coach Carl Lacey is unconcerned that his side may have peaked too early or their semi-final defeat to Scotland Town as they head into Sunday’s Ulster Club Football Final against Errigal Ciaran.

A Scotland City side full of County Monaghan stars past and present beat Kilkull by a point in last year’s Ulster quarter-finals, but no one predicted that The 2022 All-Ireland champions won 5-10 to 0-14 two weeks ago.

In contrast, Errigal Ciaran needed Ruairi Canavan to beat Clan Eireann 0-14 to 1-10 in the semi-finals with a superb individual performance The team looked to be in control until Tiernan Kelly was sent off in the 40th minute.

History shows that many humble semi-final victories have been followed by eventual triumphs, but former Donegal all-star Lacey doesn’t buy into the media chatter.

“It probably has nothing to do with us as a team. As a player you hide yourself away from it all,” Lacey told BBC Sport NI.

“I’m not just saying that. It’s reality. Players don’t need management to get them back on their feet. They do it themselves. After the final whistle, we regrouped. We hugged each other, we stretched and we talked for a while.

“When the kids get home, that game is blank and they’re looking forward to the next game and ready to go again. That’s the reality.”
