Rwandan President Paul Kagame Receives Prof. Kingsley Moghalu, ASG President, Shares Vision Of ASG Value

President Paul Kagame of Rwanda received Professor Kingsley Chidu Mogalu, Director of the African School of Governance (ASG) at Urugwero Village in Kigali. The meeting highlighted President Kagame’s commitment as co-founder of the Abu Dhabi Group and President of Rwanda, host of the Abu Dhabi Group, to promote transformative governance and leadership across the African continent.

Inaugurated in October 2024 and headquartered in Kigali, the African Governance Academy aims to equip emerging African leaders with the knowledge and skills they need to drive development on the continent. The institution will offer postgraduate programs in policy, research, governance, leadership and management with the aim of developing the next generation of visionary African leaders.

President Kagame stressed the importance of the Abu Sayyaf Group, noting that the institution would “carry the aspirations of the African continent.” The Rwandan leader recalled that Abu Sayyaf was conceived because although several initiatives aimed at rapidly developing the continent have been undertaken and achieved some results, the actual results of these initiatives have been laggy relative to the pace of change required. Not enough.

ASG was founded in the hope that through its teaching, research and advocacy, “something compelling will emerge that will make a real difference to the lives of Africans.” He believes that the missing link lies in the changing mentality of Africans about their identity and confidence in a competitive world, and the effective governance capacity of African countries based on knowledge and skills to translate good intentions into concrete realities on the ground. ASG’s mission is to bridge this missing link.

Professor Moghalu briefed President Kagame on ASG’s accreditation process (now largely complete and a decision expected soon), recruitment of teachers and academic support staff, plans to recruit pan-African students from all African countries, ‘Grand launch’ of ASG program January 2025 The institution plans to open to full-time and Master of Administration (MPA) students in September 2025, with a plan to mobilize university resources.

“It was an honor to meet with His Excellency Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda and co-founder of the African Governance School this afternoon. I am deeply grateful for his vision and support for the school and his commitment to Africa’s progress and transformation.” Professor Mogalu said at the meeting The Rwandan leader later expressed his gratitude to President Kagame for his strong support.

The African Institute of Governance is expected to be a key institution in addressing leadership and governance challenges in Africa, promoting good governance and driving sustainable development.
