Ramaphosa Vows G20 Unity Amid Trump’s Combative Policy Signals
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed confidence in the G20’s ability to deal with potential disruptions from US President-elect Donald Trump’s “America First” policies. Despite Trump’s skepticism about international climate cooperation, Ramaphosa, whose country took over the G20 presidency from Brazil on Sunday, stressed a commitment to addressing the impact of climate change on developing countries . He also said the G20 would have “enough shock absorbers” to allow it to continue operating with or without U.S. support. Trump, who returned to the White House in January, said his foreign policy would be combative. After pledging to impose tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China on his first day in office, he threatened to impose similar measures on BRICS countries if they go ahead with plans to abandon the dollar in international trade.
