Omer Riza: Cardiff City appoint interim boss until end of season

Riza joined the Blue Jays from Watford at the start of the season and was asked to be promoted from assistant coach to interim head coach when Brutt was fired on September 22.

Riza had won four of his first seven games but the Cardiff board balked as the search for Brut’s permanent successor dragged on for more than two months.

Former players and fans have criticized club owner Vincent Tan, chairman Mehmet Dalman and chief executive Ken Choo over the lack of clarity over Riza’s future.

Cardiff City have drawn two and lost three of their last five games and sit 20th in the Championship, two points above the relegation zone.

Cardiff City boss Vincent Tan said: “During Omar’s tenure as interim manager, we have clearly seen an improvement in playing style and performance, with some encouraging results.

“After careful consideration over recent weeks of what is the best decision for the club and this player, I am delighted to give Omar this opportunity and wish him all the best.

“Obviously our aim is to get into the Championship and further develop a squad with youth and quality at its core.

“I thank our supporters for their patience during this critical review period and hope we can all enjoy better times throughout the remainder of the season.”

Riza said: “I am delighted to continue leading this brilliant football club and would like to thank Tan Sri Vincent and the Board of Directors for this opportunity.

“We have made real progress over the past few weeks and I’m looking forward to continuing our work on the training ground over the coming months.

“I’m very excited for the rest of the season and hope Blue Jays fans look forward to joining us.”
