President-elect Donald Trump appoints Paul Atkins to lead Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)his latest move to fill key financial positions for the next administration.
Atkins, CEO of Patomak Global Partners, a Washington, D.C.-based consulting firm, served as an SEC commissioner under former President George W. Bush and most recently worked on Issues related to digital assets – This topic is expected to be a focus of the incoming Trump administration.
“Paul is a proven leader on common-sense regulations,” Trump wrote on the Truth Social platform on Wednesday. “He believes in the promise of robust, innovative capital markets that meet the needs of investors and provide the capital to make our economy the best in the world. He also recognizes the importance of digital assets and other innovations in making America the best economy in the world. It matters more than ever.”
The SEC has broad responsibility for the regulation of financial markets and investor protection. Atkins, who needs Senate confirmation, will succeed Gary Gensler, who said last month he will step down January.
Trump recently named billionaire hedge fund manager Scott Bessant his Select finance minister and Cantor Fitzgerald, CEO Howard Lutnick Lead the Department of Commerce. Media reports also suggest Trump is considering possible alternatives Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell.
Trump may have the opportunity to replace several SEC commissioners whose terms are set to expire during his administration.
