Ousmane Sonko Stays as Senegal’s Prime Minister Ending Speculations
Senegal’s Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has confirmed that he will continue to serve as head of government rather than preside over parliament, following his party’s landslide victory in snap parliamentary elections on November 17. The ruling Pastef party, led by Sonko and President Basilou Diomaye Faye, won 130 of the 165 seats, one of the most seats in Senegalese history. The victory sparked debate over Sonko’s political role, with some stakeholders suggesting he resign as prime minister and take over as leader of parliament. They believe this will help ensure institutional balance and avoid potential administrative conflicts. However, Sonko, who was crucial to Faye’s election, stressed his commitment to supporting the president’s government. Subsequently, he resigned as a member of Parliament and announced that work on the “Prime Minister’s Office” had begun.
