Marc Guehi: Crystal Palace captain says rainbow armband message one of ‘truth and inclusivity’
Crystal Palace captain Mark Gay said the “Jesus loves you” message he wrote on his rainbow armband on Tuesday was one of “truth, love and inclusion”.
The Football Association will not take formal action against the England centre-back or Crystal Palace, despite the 24-year-old ignoring the organization’s reminder that religious messages are prohibited on his shirts.
Geshe wrote “I love Jesus” on his rainbow captain’s armband during Saturday’s game against Newcastle United and was later informed of the FA’s rules on the issue.
However, the defender had a similar message displayed on his armband against Ipswich Town at Portman Road.
Wearing the rainbow armband is part of the Premier League’s LGBTQ+ inclusion initiative, which is in partnership with charity Stonewall. Team captains are encouraged but not required to wear them.
“To be honest, the message is just a message about truth, love and inclusivity,” said Gersh, who did not elaborate further in a wide-ranging interview.
The full interview can be heard on BBC Radio 5 Sports Live ahead of the commentary for Crystal Palace’s clash with Manchester City on Saturday.
“I don’t think there’s any harm in this message – that’s all I can say, honestly.
“I believe 100 percent in the words that I wrote and even in the words that I’m saying now – it’s a message of truth and love and I hope people understand that what I believe in is what I believe in and I’m going to stand by it.” I for the rest of his life. “
