Joe Biden Tackles Legacy of Slavery During Angola Visit

During his visit to Luanda, President Joe Biden will visit Angola’s National Slavery Museum to address the transatlantic slave trade and its enduring legacy. His visit to the museum will focus on the 17th-century Capela da Casa Grande church, where slave traders forcibly baptized slaves before shipping them across the Atlantic to the Americas. As part of efforts to confront the history of the transatlantic slave trade, the United States has pledged $229,000 to support the museum’s restoration. Washington also said it supports Angola’s bid to designate the Kwanza Corridor, a route used to transport captured slaves to the coast, as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Biden’s trip will also include a visit to the port of Lobito, where he will highlight $4 billion in Western investment in the Lobito Corridor, a sign of renewed U.S. interest in Africa amid China’s dominance.
