Responding to the criticism, United said in a statement on Monday: “As a club we are constantly working on cost savings to put us on a stronger financial footing.

“This means very difficult decisions have to be made, including significantly reducing staff numbers.

“It also means looking at opportunities to increase revenue so that we can continue to invest in football and infrastructure.

“We have now sold over 97% of our tickets for the season, many of which are at a discount. We are implementing some policy changes for sold-out games and only releasing a small number of tickets.”

In its first-quarter financial results released last week, United revealed they had spent £8.6 million as part of a redundancy program that has seen around 250 staff lose their jobs.

Sir Alex Ferguson will also step down as United ambassador at the end of the season, having paid him millions of pounds in fees since retiring as manager in 2013.
