Woman fends off deadly snake on Melbourne motorway
A driver who made an unexpected stop on a Melbourne motorway looked down to find a deadly snake inside her car and crawling up her legs.
Victoria Police said officers were called to conduct a welfare check on the woman, who was “acting hissing on the side of the road” and trying to stop passing vehicles.
The woman told police she was driving on the Monash Highway at 80km/h (50mph) when she felt something on her foot.
Melbourne Snake Control was called to recover the animal, which was identified as a tiger snake, one of the most venomous reptiles in the world.
The Melbourne Snake Control Center posted on social media that the driver was taken to hospital with a suspected snakebite and was in good condition.
Victoria Police said: “Remarkably she was able to fend off the snake and weave through traffic before pulling over to the side of the road, jumping out of the car and escaping to safety.”
Police said she was “disturbed” and “in a state of shock”.
Police added that passing motorists were “confused” when the snake was pulled from the car. Tim Nanninga from Melbourne Snake Control said some traffickers began filming the incident.
He told ABC News he released the snake back into the wild “away from houses, people and pets.”
