Trump picks Jared Kushner’s father for ambassador to France
President-elect Donald Trump announced Saturday that he has chosen Charles Kushner to be ambassador to France.
Mr. Kushner is a real estate developer, the father of Jared Kushner, and the husband of his daughter, Ivanka Trump. Trump pardoned Kushner during his first term and vacated the 2020 federal conviction.
In a post on his social media site, Truth Social, Mr. Trump called Mr. Kushner “an outstanding business leader, philanthropist and dealmaker who will be a powerful advocate on behalf of our country and its interests.” .
The nomination appears to be Trump’s first formal offer to a relative for a government position since his re-election.
Also on Saturday, Trump announces two more picks – Selected former aide Kash Patel, a frequent critic of the agency, to lead the FBI.
Separately, Hillsborough County, Florida Sheriff Chad Chronister has been nominated to head the Drug Enforcement Administration.
Like many other presidential picks, ambassadorial appointments must be approved by a majority vote of the U.S. Senate.
It’s unclear what role Kushner’s background might play in his confirmation hearings.
The elder Kushner pleaded guilty to federal charges of tax evasion, campaign finance crimes and witness tampering and was sentenced to two years in prison in 2005.
In evidence presented in court, prosecutors said Kushner targeted a brother-in-law who was cooperating with authorities against him. He hired a prostitute to seduce the man and planned to intimidate him by sending a video to his wife, Mr. Kushner’s sister.
Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who ran against Trump in the most recent Republican primary, prosecuted the case at the time and called it “the most disgusting, disgusting crime he had ever seen.” one”.
Jared Kushner served as an adviser during Trump’s first administration when Trump pardoned Charles Kushner in a series of announcements that also included former campaign manager Paul Manafort and the pardon of former adviser Roger Stone.
Trump praised Jared Kushner’s work in Saturday’s announcement and said he looked forward to working with Charles Kushner.
“Together we will strengthen the United States’ partnership with France, our oldest ally and one of our greatest!”
