Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) Supports Fisheries in Niger – Africa.com
As part of the “Guichet Unique 3A” project launched by Niger’s Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Environment, the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TıKA) established a hatchery and fish feed production unit. The project aims to expand freshwater and pond fisheries while strengthening existing production systems.
In Niger, a country dominated by agriculture and livestock farming, government-supported pond and freshwater fisheries initiatives and alternative production facilities are increasingly becoming part of modern integrated production policies.
The “Guichet Unique 3A” model implemented by Niger’s Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Environment aims to achieve self-sufficiency in the fisheries sector by meeting fish farms’ needs for fry, feed and technical support. This model is implemented by multiple agencies in different regions and plays a key role in reducing dependence on imports and promoting the growth of fishing activities.
Under this initiative, TıKA established a hatchery and a fish feed production unit at the Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Agriculture, Dan Dicko Dankoulodo University, Maradi. The facility supports Maradi’s “Guichet Unique 3A” program, providing fish fry, feed and technical assistance to fish producers in the surrounding area.
These units are equipped with state-of-the-art production and training tools to enhance fry production infrastructure. TıKA provides equipment such as broodstock, fish feed, spawning hormones, health kits, water purifiers, oxygen concentrators, analyzers and other basic supplies.
The fully equipped production unit was officially handed over to the university in a ceremony attended by the Rector of Dan Dicko Dankoulodo University of Maradi, department heads, TıKA representatives and teachers and students.
The project aims to increase fish production by meeting the core needs of fish farms in Niger, promote increased fish consumption, diversify animal production capacity and income sources, and support R&D initiatives and academic research to improve fishing technologies.
