Global Alarm as Domestic Violence Claims 85,000 Women’s Lives in 2023 – Africa.com
According to a United Nations report, an average of 140 women and girls were killed every day in 2023 by an intimate partner or family member, making the home the deadliest place for women. A UNODC report released on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women found that 60% of the 85,000 women and girls killed globally were victims of such violence. Africa has the highest death toll with 21,700 deaths per 100,000 people and 2.9 deaths per 100,000 people, followed by the Americas and Oceania with 1.6 and 1.5 deaths respectively. The number of victims was lower in Asia and Europe, at 0.8 and 0.6 respectively. The report highlighted the stark gender disparity in homicides, finding that 80% of homicide victims are male. However, women are disproportionately affected in domestic settings, with only 11.8% of men dying at the hands of an intimate partner or family member.
