WRU begins search for new Wales women head coach
The Wales Rugby Union (WRU) has officially launched a search for a new head coach for the Wales women’s team.
At the beginning of this month, Eoin Cunningham resigns – The WRU said it was a mutually agreed decision – after three years in charge and a tumultuous year on and off the pitch.
Wales have won just four of 11 Tests in 2024, Welsh rugby’s governing body admit serious negligence Much like how it handled player contract negotiations in the summer.
The WRU said the new head coach will lead a squad of 37 WRU-contracted players and “is expected to achieve and drive performance and culture to the highest standards”.
The successful candidate will have “experience at a professional, national and international level” and the WRU hopes the person will be able to build key relationships, play a key strategic role in developing Welsh talent and establish Wales as a “top five country in the world” one”.
Wales are currently ranked 10th in the world, but before their current slump they finished third in two consecutive Six Nations (2022 and 2023) and qualified for the 2023 WXV1.
WRU chief executive Abi Tierney said: “This is a vital appointment for the Welsh Rugby Union and we are looking for the highest quality candidate with a high performance record.
“This appointment will play an integral role in our Welsh rugby strategy with the 2025 Six Nations and World Cup approaching.
“We need someone to take the team into the next stage of professionalism and lead the development of a strong and dynamic team dynamic.”
