Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania Forge Regional Power Partnership – Africa.com
Kenya will mediate a power export agreement between Ethiopia and Tanzania to promote regional energy distribution. Under the agreement, Ethiopia will provide 100 megawatts of electricity to Tanzania through Kenya’s transmission infrastructure. Ethiopian Electric Power said the final volume of electricity delivered may be adjusted in upcoming negotiations. The arrangement will see electricity flow from the Sodo region in southern Ethiopia to Suswa in Kenya and then to Arusha in northern Tanzania. The agreement comes as Tanzania faces severe power supply challenges, with 36 million citizens lacking reliable electricity. Ethiopia has taken advantage of recent dam construction, such as the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, to expand electricity exports to shore up its industrial sector. Kenya will start importing 200 MW of electricity from Ethiopia in 2022, pending regulatory approval, and will play a key role in this energy partnership.
