South Africa’s ANC Upholds Jacob Zuma’s Expulsion Following Appeal – Africa.com
The African National Congress (ANC) has confirmed its decision to expel former leader Jacob Zuma but rejected his appeal to overturn the expulsion. The party ousted Zuma in July after he founded a rival party, MK, which challenged the ANC in May’s general election. Last month he appealed his expulsion and asked to defend himself in person rather than by virtual phone call. He also demanded that the party make its internal disciplinary procedures public. However, the ANC rejected both requests and upheld its decision to expel him from the party. In a statement announcing its decision, the ANC criticized Zuma’s actions, saying they undermined the party’s efforts to reinvent itself. The ANC later accused him of disloyalty and condemned his actions as “the highest form of indiscipline”. Despite being a formal member of the ANC, Zuma campaigned for MK, helping the newly formed party win 58 parliamentary seats.
