Senegal’s Ruling Party Secures Strong Majority in Legislative Elections – Africa.com
The Pastef party, led by Senegalese President Basilou Diomaye Faye, won 130 of the 165 parliamentary seats in the latest legislative elections, according to results released by the National Counting Commission. Faye took office in April and dissolved parliament in September, citing opposition resistance to his legislative proposals. The newly elected majority is expected to help him deliver on his promises to create jobs, lower prices and improve services. Faye’s first challenge will be resolving Senegal’s fiscal crisis, which includes negotiating with the International Monetary Fund to revive a stalled $1.9 billion program. The loan was put on hold after an audit showed the country’s debt and deficit were higher than reported by the previous government. Pastev’s representative Amadou Ba said the election results strengthened the government’s legitimacy and should encourage the country’s international partners.
