Mohamed Salah contract: Jamie Carragher says Liverpool forward ‘selfish’ for comments

talking about BBC Radio 5 Live Monday NightclubChris Sutton says Salah’s decision to speak to reporters in the mixed zone about his future shows he wants to stay at Anfield.

“This was not one of those situations where Mo Salah was asked to speak, he actually approached and wanted to speak to a few members of the media to get his feelings off his chest,” said the former Blackburn and Chelsea striker. “So from that aspect “That tells me he wants to stay.”

The Athletic’s Rory Smith added: “What strikes me is that he made it clear to Liverpool fans that he wanted to stay, and if he doesn’t end up staying it won’t be a lack of will on his part.

“The problem is his age. Liverpool are going to look at a lot of data on footballers over the last 20, 30 years, which shows that at some point in your 30s your performance does decline. They will want to know if that’s the case.” For a player who may only last another year at this level, it’s worth investing around £300,000 a week.

“Or maybe he’ll be at this level for another two years? Or five or six years? That’s the gamble Liverpool have to take.”

In addition to Salah, defender Trent Alexander-Arnold and club captain Virgil van Dijk are also out of contract at the end of the season.

Carragher added: “The most important thing for Liverpool Football Club this season is not the future of Salah, Van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold. “The most important thing is that Liverpool win the Premier League.

“I hope they don’t feel like this club will fall apart if they leave. Steven Gerrard left the club and the next manager won the Premier League. Graeme Souness left and Liverpool won the Double Crown King.”

“Salah, will we miss him? Of course we will. But Liverpool will move on.”
