Formula 1: General Motors agrees in principle to enter F1 in 2026 with Cadillac brand

American auto giant General Motors has reached an agreement in principle to enter Formula One with its Cadillac brand in 2026.

General Motors and its partner TWG Global have committed to naming a new team after GM’s luxury Cadillac brand and building its own engines “at a later date,” a statement said on Monday.

F1 said the application process will “move forward”.

Greg Maffei, president and CEO of F1 commercial rights holder Liberty Media, said: “As Formula One continues its plans to grow in the U.S., we continue to believe that we would welcome an industry leader like General Motors/Cadillac. With the impressive American brand joining the circuit, General Motors can bring additional value and interest to the sport as a future power unit supplier.

“We commend General Motors and its partners for their leadership in making significant progress in their preparations to enter Formula 1.

“We are pleased to be able to move forward with the application process for GM/Cadillac Racing to compete in the 2026 championship.”

Mohammed Ben Sulayem, president of F1’s governing body, the FIA, said: “GM is a huge global brand and a giant in the OEM sector and is working with impressive partners.

“I fully support the efforts of the FIA, Formula 1, GM and the teams to maintain dialogue and work towards the outcome of an agreement in principle to progress this application to bring a GM/Cadillac branded team into the race. Road, for the 2026 FIA Formula 1 World Championship.

“All parties, including the FIA, will continue to work together to ensure this process goes smoothly.”
