Ruben Amorim: Manchester United boss says he is the ‘smiling one’
Amorim is still getting used to his players, although he has expressed his “love” for England midfielder Mason Mount for his attitude.
Amorim, 39, is United’s youngest manager since Wilf McGuinness succeeded Sir Matt Busby in 1969.
The achievements of Busby and his fellow Scot Sir Alex Ferguson are the foundation of the club’s illustrious history.
Amorim was less than two years old when Ferguson moved south from Aberdeen to join United in November 1986, and he said the pair had not yet met.
However, the Manchester United of 2024 is a far cry from the United when Ferguson left in 2013, let alone joined. The former Sporting CP boss admits he has to do the job his own way.
“I have to be me,” he said. “I always pay attention to details and try to get the players to focus on the history of the club, not just the recent history. This is a club that has to win.
“But it’s a different time. I can’t be like Alex Ferguson – it’s a different time and I need to take a different approach. But I can also be very demanding.”
