Southern African leaders have agreed to extend the deployment of regional troops in conflict-ridden eastern Congo for another year while pledging to work towards a peaceful resolution in Mozambique. The decision was taken on Wednesday at the Southern African Development Community (SADC) summit in Harare, Zimbabwe. Nearly 5,000 SADC troops, mainly from South Africa, Tanzania and Malawi, are currently stationed in eastern Congo, a region plagued by armed violence involving more than 100 groups and various foreign powers competing for land, mineral resources and power. control. U.N. peacekeepers will also stay longer than initially planned due to the recent escalation of tensions. Additionally, the group is determined to push for a peaceful resolution to Mozambique’s electoral dispute, which has led to violent protests that left 30 people dead.
