The film is set during the Roman Empire and centers on Maximus, a general who finds himself forced into slavery and must fight as a gladiator. Obsessed with revenge against Commodus for murdering his family and the Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Commodus’ father), his goal is to win freedom and the trust of his audience.
Maximus gained allies, including Lucilla, sister of his former lover Commodus. She and her son Lucius fell under her brother’s malevolent control. This is a movie filled with deadly fights, bold threats and secret meetings.
Nearly 25 years after its release, the Academy Award-winning “Gladiator” is now considered a classic. The sequel will be released on November 22, with Nelson reprising his role as Lucilla and Paul Mescal as the now grown-up Lucius.
