Daniel Jones released: New York Giants part ways with struggling quarterback

The New York Giants have “mutually agreed” to terminate the contract of quarterback Daniel Jones, less than two years after he signed a $160 million contract extension with the NFL team.

Jones, a 2019 first-round draft pick, lost his job as the Giants’ starting quarterback earlier this week.

The Giants have won just two of 10 games this season and have lost their past five games.

“Daniel came to see me this morning and asked if we were going to release him,” Giants president John Mara said.

“We all agreed this was what was best for him and the team. Daniel is a great representative of our organization and is first-class in every aspect. His handling of the situation yesterday was evidence of that.

“We are all disappointed with how things turned out. We have great respect for Daniel and admire him very much. We wish him nothing but the best for the future.”

Former undrafted free agent Tommy DeVito has been promoted to starting quarterback, coach Brian Daboll announced Monday.

Jones, 27, joined the Giants in 2019 and received a four-year contract worth $160 million in 2023, two of which are guaranteed.

At the time, that made him one of the ten highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL.

His passer rating this season ranks 32nd among all qualifying quarterbacks, with seven interceptions and eight touchdowns in 2024.
