Meet the Candidates Contesting in Namibia’s 2024 Presidential Race – Africa.com

Namibia’s presidential election on November 27 could mark a turning point if the ruling Namibia People’s Party loses power. The party has led the country since gaining independence in 1990, but its popularity has since declined. Five major candidates are running. SWAPO’s candidate, Vice President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, is the party’s first female presidential candidate. Former SWAPO member Panduleni Itula is the second candidate. He leads the Independent Patriots for Change party and received 29% of the vote in the 2019 elections. The third candidate is McHenry Venani, leader of the largest opposition party in the Namibian Parliament. In 2003, he was elected to parliament, becoming the youngest member of the parliament. The fourth contender is Bernadus Swartbooi of the Landless People’s Movement, a former SWAPO deputy minister, and Job Amupanda, a former SWAPO youth leader , now leading an equal rights repositioning of the party.
