Iakopo Mapu: Northampton Saints sign Samoa international
Although Mapp grew up half a world away from Northampton, he has a keen interest in the Saints.
The Pithi brothers Ken and George, who were part of Northampton’s 2014 title-winning side, are two former Samoa internationals with whom he is familiar.
“I was born and raised in Samoa but when I moved to New Zealand for high school I lived with the Pisi brothers and their family,” he said.
“We know each other really well and their parents gave me great advice throughout my junior rugby career and Ken and George always gave me Northampton jerseys to wear in training – which I loved.”
Saints director of rugby Phil Dawson said the club believed Mapp could “thrive” in the Premier League.
“He’s very physical, aggressive and athletic and has a ton of talent and potential,” Dawson said.
