Best Workout Mirrors for 2024
If you want a more personalized experience, Forme Studio may be your best choice. Forme offers two different types of mirrors: Forme Studio and Forme Lift. Studio is the original mirror offering on-demand classes and custom workouts, as well as live 1:1 personal training. The Forme Lift is an upgraded version of the Forme Studio, offering the same classes and personal training, but with motorized resistance ropes (up to 150 pounds of resistance) designed to enhance your strength training experience. The Forme Studio is priced at $2,495, while the Forme Lift is priced at a whopping $6,495.
I was able to test both, but I think the average person will find the Forme Studio a better fit for their home. If you purchase the Forme Studio, you can choose to lean it against the wall or mount it on the wall for extra security. You’ll also want to make sure you have 6 by 6 feet of space, with at least 7 feet of floor-to-ceiling space to accommodate the unit. Your walls must have 12, 16, or 18 inches spaced between metal or wood studs, poured concrete, or concrete block.
Admittedly, Forme Studio is touchscreen, but there’s also an app (currently only available on iOS). I found the images on the Forme Studio to be the best of any smart mirror as it shoots in 4K resolution, similar to Some of the better TVs on the market. Instructors also look life-size on screen, making it feel like they’re in the room with you. The device has two front-facing cameras, which comes in handy if you sign up for a personal training session (more on that later). Forme includes a camera cover for added privacy.
You need Wi-Fi to use Forme Studio. You can choose to connect your workout headphonesForme heart rate monitor (included in the accessory box), other compatible heart rate monitors or an Apple smartwatch connected via Bluetooth. One drawback is that you can only access the built-in music on the device.
Forme membership costs $49 for the first month and $149 per month thereafter, which is too high a price if the membership itself isn’t cheap. You need a membership to access more than 700 on-demand classes and a fitness concierge where you fill out a questionnaire asking about your goals, fitness level and lifestyle, then create a workout plan with on-demand recommended videos. Forme’s library is released weekly. You can create up to six profiles using your membership. The video library gives you the option to choose from beginner, intermediate or advanced classes for workouts like barre (which you can also purchase Separate handlebar attachment $395), strength training, boxing, yoga, Pilates, Barry’s X, dance and meditation. You can also join the program if you want to tackle a specific challenge this month. Keep in mind that some of these classes will require you to have additional equipment such as dumbbells on hand. You can filter by class length, workout type, level, instructor and required equipment.
I tested a few classes, and for the most part, the experience was similar to other smart mirrors. You can adjust the audio depending on whether you want to listen to more music or coaching, which I like because it helps you focus. In class, the mirror wasn’t as impressive as I thought it would be since it only counts your reps. Unlike the Lululemon Studio Mirror, there won’t be a sense of camaraderie with other members if you’re looking for a group fitness feel. I would have thought that Forme Studio would be able to offer shape corrections or hint suggestions like Fit Mini, but that’s not the case. Forme Studio stands out for its 1:1 on-site personal training (which you can set up through the fitness concierge).
The experience is similar to doing personal training in person, which is where the two front-facing cameras are most useful. You will be able to view them from the screen during scheduled sessions with the trainer and vice versa. The instructor is able to provide feedback because the camera tracks your movements and entire frame (even if you are taller). If you own a Forme Lift, your trainer can adjust the resistance on the machine remotely if they want to challenge you. Even when you’re traveling, you can access your personal training sessions from your tablet. Your coach can still see you because camera tracking works similarly on tablets.
