Senegal’s Ruling Party Claims Victory in Legislative Elections
The ruling Bastef party’s decisive victory in recent legislative elections has laid the groundwork for President Basilu Diomaye Faye’s reform agenda. Voting across the country was peaceful, with early results favoring the government over the opposition. The victory comes after Faye’s tumultuous first eight months in power, during which he was unable to implement his promised policies due to opposition in the opposition-controlled parliament. Faye dissolved parliament in September, leading to the election. His government has vowed to diversify partnerships and strengthen national sovereignty if it gains control of parliament. Although voter turnout was lower than in the presidential election, the ruling party’s victory underscored the mandate for change in a country grappling with high unemployment and inflation.
