Derry City: Larne manager Tiernan Lynch in frame to become Candystripes boss

Lynch took over as head coach of Larne in 2017 and led the team from the Second Division to back-to-back top-flight titles.

He also led the team to the UEFA league stage this season, with Larne becoming the first Northern Ireland team to qualify for the group or league stages of a major European competition.

The 44-year-old turned down the chance to join Scottish Premiership club St Johnstone in September.

Larne have made a poor start to their title defense and currently sit ninth in the Irish Premiership table.

Inver are 14 points behind leaders Linfield with three games remaining after losing 1-0 at home to the Blues at the weekend.

Lynch will oversee Derry’s rebuild after a disappointing fourth-place finish in the Premier League last season.

The Candy Stripes were locked in a title race with eventual champions Shelbourne for much of the season, but the end of the league – coupled with defeat in the cup final – means Derry will be unable to compete in European football next season.

They also lost Brother Sean and captain Patrick McEleney to Glentoran and Ballymena United respectively, while Colm Whelan lost his contract to Bo Simians.
