Leah Williamson: Arsenal defender ‘in good place’ after ‘heavy’ criticism
It’s not just Williamson and her teammates who have been criticized this season, former coach Edvard was also criticized before his departure.
The brick wall opposite the Emirates Stadium was covered in “Jonas Out” graffiti before the Gunners lost 2-1 to Chelsea and Adwal’s final game in charge.
The 41-year-old resigned after three years in charge, recording just one win in his first four games in the WSL.
“It’s difficult. We’re all human and those fans don’t know who he is,” Williamson said.
“It’s sad when you see someone being attacked and you know they’re a great person. But we know how things go and that’s been the case in the men’s game for many years. It’s ruthless and we all “You know, when we sign it doesn’t mean it’s right, but it’s part of the game.”
Williamson and Arsenal appear to have turned things around under interim manager Renee Sleggs.
The Gunners appear to have made a seamless transition to the Dutch women’s side, winning four and drawing one of their five games in charge.
“I’m trying to understand it myself,” Williamson said. “We’re probably under the most pressure because we haven’t started the way we need to, so every game is a must-win game. But it feels very calm.
“Renee knows all of us. She has an individual connection with everyone. We got into some ruts where there was a lack of confidence and she just stripped it out and wanted the best out of every player. It works.”
“At the end of the day, we’re going to be better every week than we were the week before. We’re doing great and everything is looking good at the moment. We’re getting good results and we’re working hard.”
Arsenal take on Tottenham Hotspur in the north London derby at 13:45 GMT on Saturday, live on BBC One and BBC Radio 5 Live.
