That’s what Gagan Gupta told an audience of investors and entrepreneurs earlier this year, to loud applause. Mr. Gupta, whose company operates in logistics and utilities across Africa, is optimistic about the continent and sharply critical of outsiders’ ability to assess it. Philippe Valahu, boss of infrastructure finance group PIDG, echoed the sentiment: “I spend a lot of time removing risk perceptions,” he said. Aubrey Hruby, who advises investors entering Africa, recalled, “[Americans]always say, what about corruption? I think how many mayors in the United States are in jail now for corruption? ?”
