Four arrests after M62 crash during police pursuit
A man is in hospital with serious injuries after a crash involving police during a car chase on the M62.
West Yorkshire Police said the white Toyota Corolla collided with a Peugeot 306 before junction 24 heading towards Huddersfield at around 15:00 GMT on Saturday.
The driver of the Peugeot was taken to hospital and four female passengers in the Toyota were arrested on suspicion of motor vehicle theft.
The motorway was closed in both directions for more than five hours following the incident, with National Highways reporting delays of an hour.
Police said the Toyota failed to stop for police on the M621 as it was heading towards the M62 at Birstall at around 14:55.
The pursuit was authorized and the car drove at high speed onto the M62 towards Manchester.
Police said the Peugeot driver was seriously injured in the crash and was in critical but stable condition in hospital.
The eastbound lanes of the motorway reopened at around 20:20, but police said the westbound lanes would remain closed until the early hours of Sunday as investigations continued.
Police added that the Independent Office for Police Conduct had been notified, which is standard procedure for such incidents.
