video storage

It may be important to preserve footage of intruders or porch pirates (or similar issues). Even cheap doorbells often come with a subscription option to store video in the cloud (usually a few dollars per month). Some have local storage options, so study the details carefully if you want to avoid these ongoing fees.

artificial intelligence recognition

Object recognition using artificial intelligence capabilities is particularly useful for video doorbells, allowing the gadget to identify packages, people, animals, and vehicles and send you only important alerts. In our experience, doorbells often spot joggers and people walking their pets, but good recognition can reduce your stress by avoiding vehicle and animal alarms. Some companies keep object recognition included in the subscription, while others offer it for free.

Smart home compatibility

If you already have a security system or a preferred voice assistant (such as Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant), always look for a video doorbell that fits your current choice. Amazon brands tend to limit their doorbells to Alexa only. Apple Siri and Apple Home compatibility are particularly hard to find here, especially for a budget option.

Wired vs wireless

Battery models are easier to place, but sometimes (not always) cost more. Corded models are often the best savings. We found two reasonably priced options.

audio quality

If you prefer talking through your doorbell, look for one with effective two-way audio, preferably with noise cancellation or similar features. We test the audio quality of every doorbell we review to make sure you can carry on a conversation.

Field of view and resolution

Video doorbells don’t need a particularly wide field of view, but if they face a large front yard then the quality is good. Additionally, higher resolution makes it easier to see faces and other important details, so it’s best to find models that are at least HD.
