Ramgoolam Sworn In as Mauritius Prime Minister After Landslide Win
The Alliance for Change (ADC) coalition led by Naveen Ramgoolam achieved a landslide victory, winning 60 of the 62 seats in the National Assembly of Mauritius, and became the Prime Minister of Mauritius again after a gap of ten years. Ramgoolam, 77, who led the country from 1995 to 2000 and 2005 to 2014, was sworn in at a ceremony attended by senior state officials. He attributed his victory to public dissatisfaction and promised to bring about change. During his most recent term, from 2005 to 2014, Ramgoolam implemented policies aimed at diversifying Mauritius’ economy beyond tourism, textiles and sugar exports. Since then, the small Indian Ocean country has become an offshore financial hub for businesses around the world. Outgoing Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth led the country to 7.0% economic growth last year. Still, his support dropped due to a cost-of-living crisis and corruption allegations, leading to his party’s electoral defeat.
