With Donald Trump set to return to the White House for a second term, U.S.-China competition in Africa is likely to intensify. While Trump acknowledged China’s influence as a threat during his first term, some experts predict he may adopt an “America first” approach in his second term, potentially putting Africa on the periphery . However, Tibor Nagy, assistant secretary of state for African affairs during Trump’s first term, believes the continent will remain vital due to its strategic minerals. In contrast, analysts such as Christian-Gerard Nima and Sun Yun believe that the United States under Trump will disengage from Africa, which may give China greater influence across the continent. The Biden administration has recently attempted to counter China’s dominance through initiatives such as the Lobito Corridor project, a major U.S.-backed infrastructure project. However, Trump’s potential return raises questions about the future of such cooperation. Caught between these global powers, Africa may use competition to negotiate better deals, although some leaders would rather not take sides.
