Ghana’s Supreme Court has restored the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s parliamentary majority ahead of the December 7 elections. The decision came after Speaker Alban Bagbin declared four parliamentary seats vacant as unconstitutional. Babin’s move temporarily shifted the parliamentary majority to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), but a 5-2 court ruling has now restored the NPP’s slim majority – 138 seats to the NDC’s 137 seats. The ruling stabilizes the NPP’s position ahead of the upcoming general election. Watched the election, which pitted former President John Mahama against Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia. However, there are concerns about the integrity of the election, with the National Democratic Council alleging irregularities in the electoral roll. December’s vote will mark Ghana’s ninth consecutive general election since it returned to multi-party democracy in 1992.
