Here Are the Top 10 Passwords for 2024, and They’re All Embarrassing

How come so many people have been hacked? Apparently, many of them don’t put much thought into choosing passwords for their personal and work accounts. This is according to the sixth annual report Analysis of personal password habits Password manager NordPass was developed in partnership with threat management software NordStellar.

“Guess what?” the report’s introduction asks. “(Passwords) still suck.”

How bad is it? So bad that you might think Homer Simpson just typed his passwords by tapping his hands on his computer keyboard. The report shows that the most popular password for personal and corporate accounts in the world is 123456, with more than 3 million people using personal accounts and more than 1.2 million using corporate accounts.

“‘123456’ once again takes the title of world’s worst password!” NordPass analysis reports. “In fact, it was the most used password six times during our six-year study, and topped the list five times. ‘Password’ only held this less noble title once.”

Based on the analysis, here are the top five passwords for personal accounts.

  2. 123456789
  3. 12345678
  4. password
  5. qwerty123

Here are the top five business accounts.

  1. 123456
  2. 123456789
  3. 12345678
  4. secret
  5. password

It reportedly takes less than a second to crack any of the 10 passwords.

The company reviewed and analyzed a 2.5TB database extracted from public sources, including databases on the dark web. The data is organized by country of origin, covering 44 countries, and segregated by company and personal credentials through the use of relevant email addresses.

Tips for strengthening your password include creating a longer password and avoiding easily guessable information, such as birthdays, names, and common words. Users should not reuse passwords across different sites. Password manager Passwords are also protected without requiring users to remember dozens of complex passwords, as they only need one password to log into the password manager itself.
