David Power Jockeys’ Cup: New horse racing competition launches with £500,000 on offer for top jockey

A new competition for show jumping jockeys will launch on Friday, with the winner receiving a £500,000 prize.

The David Power Jockeys’ Cup, with a prize purse of £1.5 million, will be a three-day meeting at Cheltenham from November 15 to 17, leading up to the Grand National at Aintree in April.

Jockeys will receive points for any race broadcast on ITV Racing, with the winner receiving 10 points, second place receiving 8 points, third place receiving 6 points and fourth place receiving 4 points.

The jockey with the most points will be crowned champion and receive the top cash prize, with second place receiving £200,000 and third place £100,000, plus bonuses up to tenth place.

Current showjumping champion Harry Cobden joins Harry Skelton, Nico de Boinville and Rachael Blackmore Participate in competitions.

Cobden said: “It’s a huge offer and I’m sure will create some great rivalries as we all try to win as many ITV games as possible.”

Skelton added that the Cup would be the “pinnacle of the sport” for National Hunt jockeys and offer “huge prize money”.

Blackmore, who is currently injured, said the game “adds a huge layer of excitement” to “what is already promising to be another competitive season”.

“It’s great to see this level of innovation and investment in the racing community, particularly in jockeys,” said Blackmore, who won the 2021 Grand National and 2022 Cheltenham Gold Cup.

“The prizes on offer are incredible. It’s a great opportunity to showcase the best in the sport.”

The race is named after the co-founder of bookmaker Paddy Power and is backed by parent company Flutter, as well as the Jockey Club, Jockey Club and the Professional Jockeys’ Association.

Trainers, racing staff and the two leading qualified jockeys will also have the opportunity to win prizes.
