Chelsea v Man City: BBC Sport previews showdown between WSL top two
Manchester City were the only team Chelsea failed to beat last season on their way to a fifth successive WSL title.
Their first meeting last season was 1-1 draw, and Alex Greenwood Manchester City and Lauren Hamp were both sent off, with City getting revenge with a goal in the opposite direction 1-0 win A home run at Kingsmeadow ended Chelsea’s 22-game unbeaten run.
“Manchester City were clearly the better team in the two head-to-head matches last season,” The Guardian’s Tom Gary told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“Obviously, by the end of the season, those small margins will have a huge impact.
“I think City will go into this game with a lot of confidence. They know from last year that they can be a better side.”
City fell six points clear at the end of the season, with Emma Hayes’ side winning the title on goal difference.
But City have a good record against Chelsea, beating them seven times in the WSL. Only Arsenal have won more in the WSL against the Blues 10 times.
“Everyone wants to see who can knock Chelsea off their throne,” added former Manchester City defender Jane Beatty. “When it comes to that answer, the team that’s on everyone’s mind is Manchester City.
“This is definitely the top matchup that everyone wants.”
