Algeria Invests $1 Billion in New Rail Coaches to Boost National Connectivity – Africa.com
Algeria’s National Railway Transport Company (SNTF) is leading a major rail revitalization project aimed at achieving full connectivity for the country’s 47 million people by 2035. The initial phase of the project will procure 400 rail cars at an estimated cost of $1.03 billion. According to SNTF transportation manager Sifian Aibash. Algiers has issued an international tender to supply passenger rolling stock and provide specifications for electric trains for use on standard gauge railways. To support this initiative, Algeria has launched an electrification project to accommodate the installation of these trains. The North African country, which has more than 5,000 kilometers of railways, also plans to build new lines such as the Kenchela-Constantine railway to improve travel efficiency, promote regional connectivity and boost economic growth.
