Nations League: Justin Devenny receives first Northern Ireland call-up for double-header
Crystal Palace midfielder Justin Devine has been named in the Northern Ireland squad for the first time for the upcoming Nations League doubles against Belarus and Luxembourg.
It has been an unforgettable few days for the 21-year-old as he joins manager Michael O’Neill’s side after making his Premier League debut against Fulham last weekend.
The Scottish-born player, who qualified for Northern Ireland through his mother, started Saturday’s 2-0 win over Fulham at Selhurst Park and was substituted in the 74th minute.
Devine was a regular in the Northern Ireland Under-21s’ recent European Championship qualifiers and was highly recommended by manager Tommy Wright.
“The number of players we’ve dropped from the age of 21 onwards in the last 12 months has been extraordinary and Justin has been on that path,” O’Neill explained.
“Obviously, Justin’s Premier League debut has accelerated things and with there being no U21 training camps in this international window, it’s great to have him on board. We know what he’s capable of and it’s a great opportunity for him. “
