Pep Guardiola: ‘Maybe another team deserves to win Premier League’

Guardiola previously lost three consecutive games with Bayern Munich in 2014-15 before losing the fourth on penalties.

His worst experience as Manchester City manager was three consecutive defeats.

Asked about his current performance, Guardiola told Sky Sports: “Two in the Premier League. You have to count wins and losses and we will win a lot.”

“If you were to count how many wins in a row we’re still far from that position.”

He said it was “not good” to lose two league games in a row but that City were “not far” off the top of the table and were second ahead of the international break.

Manchester City took a first-half lead against Brighton on Saturday thanks to Erling Haaland’s 12th Premier League goal of the season.

The Blues dominated much of the first half, with 67% possession and five shots on target to Brighton’s zero.

But after the break, the tables were turned, with only one goal scored to Brighton’s four. City looked lethargic for much of the second half and Brighton earned the win with goals from substitutes Joao Pedro and Matt O’Reilly.

This is the first time since 2021 that Manchester City has lost a Premier League game with a half-time lead.

“We cannot complete 90 minutes now,” Guardiola said.

“We played really well in the first half, but we couldn’t keep up the pace in the second half.

“We lost again so (we will) clear our heads during the international break and hopefully our players can get fit again.”

Guardiola added at the press conference: “When the players come back, I have no doubt that we will be back to our best.”

City have a tough start after the holidays, with games against Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace, Manchester United and Aston Villa before Christmas.
