BRONX (WABC) — A car chase that spanned two boroughs ended with a police-involved shooting Saturday night.
Police said the shooting occurred in the Grand Concourse section of 161st Street and Summit Avenue, but the incident actually began when they received a call about a car being broken into in Manhattan.
Police arrived at the initial scene at 149th Street and Abbey Avenue in Hamilton Heights to investigate a car break-in.
Officials said as they surveyed the scene, they saw a vehicle driving recklessly nearby.
Police began a pursuit of the reckless driver, eventually arriving in the Bronx and arresting one of the people in the vehicle.
Another suspect fled into a swampy area near Deegan’s main highway, officials said. Minutes later, the suspect pointed his weapon at officers.
“At this time, members of the 3-0 Precinct engaged in an exchange of gunfire with the individual. After the exchange of gunfire, the individual ran into the swampy area next to Major Deegan and a second exchange of gunfire occurred,” said Patrol Captain John Chel said.
The police chief said the suspect was shot in the head and leg. Police know the 39-year-old man is currently being treated at a local hospital in critical condition.
