England in West Indies: Jos Buttler determined to lead new white-ball era after fearing sack

Buttler and Motte led England to the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia but suffered a disappointing 50-run World Cup in India last year, winning just three out of nine games.

They were then defeated by eventual champions India in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean in June.

England lost 2-1 to West Indies in the one-day international series, their 12th defeat in the decider in 18 ODI matches.

Buttler has been out for four months through injury but said the absence has left him “determined” to lead England’s latest white-ball reset.

“I just want to be involved and help develop the next era of white-ball cricket and really, really enjoy that part of my cricket,” he added.

“When you get hurt like that, you realize how desperate you are to come back.”

McCullum said part of his role was to cheer up Buttler, who he said had been “painful” at times amid England’s recent limited-overs woes.

“It’s obviously something I need to work on,” Butler said.

“I’m really excited for him to take over. You can see the impact he’s had on the Test team and the whole story around English cricket. He’s always been someone I’ve enjoyed playing with and now there’s an amazing guy to have The opportunity to coach with him.”

Buttler will be the specialist batsman for the T20 series, with Phil Salt remaining as wicketkeeper and Marcus Trescothick continuing as interim head coach.

Buttler said he decided to give up the gloves with McCullum, who has done the same during his career, to focus on the New Zealand captaincy role.

“When he got closer to the bowlers, he found it very beneficial and a good place to captain,” Buttler said.

“If something is good for me and good for the team, I’m willing to take it. I’m happy to play. There are pros and cons to both.”

West Indies have announced their 15-man squad for the first two T20 matches, with Matthew Forde replacing Alzarri Joseph, who was injured due to an injury with Shai Ho during the third ODI. Shai Hope was suspended for two games after leaving the game after an argument.
