Abu Dhabi Championship: England’s Paul Waring leads by one after third round

Two-time Abu Dhabi champion Fleetwood remained among the contenders with a 71 despite struggling with his putting.

Sweden’s Sebastian Solberberg and Denmark’s Thorbjorn Olsen were also at 15 under, and Lowry finished with a 66 after an eagle on the par-5 second hole. Made 5 birdies in the tournament.

Belgium’s Thomas Detry shot a 10-under, bogey-free 62 to join a group of six players at 14 under, including Scotland’s Robert Mai. Robert MacIntyre and England’s Tyrrell Hatton.

Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy started the day nine shots off the lead, then narrowed the gap to three shots before finishing seven shots behind. He shot a 69, 13 under.

He will win the Dubai event for the sixth time if he finishes in the top two in Abu Dhabi ahead of next week’s European Tour season final in Dubai.

“I kind of dug myself a hole, but I can still go into tomorrow feeling like I have half a chance,” McIlroy said.

“I had a bogey on the first one today and a double on the last one, but I played some really good golf in between. I just have to get the big mistakes and the big numbers off my card.”
